Baby Items Not Worth Buying

Baby Items Not Worth Buying

When I was putting together my registry, I did a lot of research on top rated items and read all the reviews like any first time mom would. However, when my baby was born and now that she is 11 months old, I realized that A LOT of the stuff I purchased was so unnecessary or could have done without. So today I’m sharing with you the baby items not worth buying. Let me know if you had similar experiences with these items or what worked for you instead.

(1). Baby Food Storage Containers

I can’t believe I thought I needed this and I only used it once. Once my baby got comfortable eating solids I just fed her what I made. I never made baby food purees and then stored it in the freezer because I didn’t have that kind of time. The containers only fit about 1-2 oz of food so if you make food in bulk, there wouldn’t be enough containers.

What to consider instead:

Boon Spoon Feeder

I had the Boon spoon feeder which was so convenient and easy to use/clean. I took it with me when we would go out and would need to feed her. I just put any kind of puree like apple sauce and it was so easy to feed her even while she was in the car seat.

(2). Bebe au Lait Nursing Cover

I thought this nursing cover was so unrealistic. It’s like an apron and open from the sides so when the baby would kick, the cover would not be so covering in my opinion. Also when Hoda was 2 months old we went to the beach and when the wind was blowing the nursing cover would just fly right off. I also found that it’s not big enough where everything is covered so this item was a no no.

What to consider instead:

Milk Snob

I wish I got this sooner because it is so multifunctional. It can be used as a nursing cover, car seat cover, shopping cart and highchair covers. It’s like one big stretchy infinity scarf that you could pull down to nurse, wear it as a scarf when you’re done or put it on the car seat to protect from wind/heat. It has no openings on the side unlike the ‘apron’ nursing cover so you don’t have to worry about not being completely covered.

(3). My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow

I wanted this instead of the typical Boppy nursing pillow but I ended up hating it because it is supposed to wrap around your waist and buckle in. When I would be nursing on my rocking chair, the pillow wouldn’t fit around me leaving me so uncomfortable and I wasn’t able to rest my back. Also, it is not fluffy whatsoever, so its not easy to adjust and it has these two strange bumps coming out on top of the pillow that would make the baby’s head too high for me to feed.

(4). Boppy Nursing Pillow

A friend of mine gave me her old Boppy nursing pillow and I ended up using that a few times. The problem with the Boppy pillow was that since my baby was a preemie, she would end up between the pillow and my tummy. It was also uncomfortable considering I had a c-section and the Boppy was applying to much pressure to the incision. I actually used my own pillow way more than the nursing pillows because it was easier to adjust around the baby’s body. The only thing I liked about it was that I could use the pillow for tummy time or prop the baby on it after feeding her and she would just fall asleep.

What to consider instead:

Luna Lullaby Bosom Baby Nursing Pillow

IF I have another baby, I will consider getting this pillow because it’s very fluffy, which means the baby won’t be too low where I will have to bend over or pull the baby’s head up. It can easily conform to your body and the baby’s body. It’s not the typical U shape which I think is different and will probably work/feel better.

(5). Changing Table/Pad

I never wanted a changing table because I knew it would be set up in the baby’s room and if I was in my room or downstairs, I wouldn’t go to her room to change her diaper. I basically just changed her diaper on my bed 99% of the time and I never once thought it would be convenient to have a changing table.

What to consider instead:

Summer Infant Changeaway

I have a couple of these changing station mats because it’s portable. I keep one in my car and on the main floor of my house so I always have a little mat for changing diapers.

(6). Baby Sized Towels

In the beginning the baby sized towels were great because babies are so small but once they get a little bigger it doesn’t even cover them completely. So most of the time I just used my own bath towel. Not worth spending the money on it in my opinion when you could just use the towels you have.

(7). Baby Blankets

I have yet to use one baby blanket! My baby was born in the summer so obviously I wasn’t using any thick fur blankets. Also everyone thinks its a great idea to gift blankets so you end up with 18798 blankets that are sitting on the top shelf of the closet. Actually, a close family friend gifted Hoda a personalized blanket with her name on it that I have used and will definitely be keeping forever. I only used the muslin swaddle blankets for swaddling and thats about it.

(8). Crib Bumpers

So I found out that crib bumpers in the state of Maryland are banned. It only applies to the non-mesh type materials though and does not apply to the vertical individual bumpers that you can put on each bar. I ended up getting the mesh crib liner from Target and I didn’t like it too much. It’s very thin so it doesn’t do much protecting from head bumps. I would have much rather gotten the individual bumpers so it actually cushions the head bumps. My baby stands up in the crib now so I don’t use the bumpers anymore. But in hindsight I probably would steer clear from crib liners in the future.
