Easy Board and Batten Inspired Accent Wall

Easy Board and Batten Inspired Accent Wall

We’re nearing the end of the year and I’m still not done with the 2021 projects! We just recently added a home gym in our basement but now it’s time to spruce up the entertainment area of the basement. #sponsored #HGTVHomebySW

The basement is where we spend a good amount of time watching movies as a family or working out. I wanted this space to feel less of an afterthought and more of a cozy/moody hangout spot. The basement is essentially a blank canvas with the long empty walls so I can get super creative with it!

Today, I am going to be adding an accent wall to the entertainment section of the basement. Not only is it going to add a little color to the space but it will allow the two spaces of the basement (gym and entertainment) to have its own moment.

DIY Board and Batten Accent Wall

I will be using the color Slate Tile (HGSW 1472) from the HGTV®  Home by Sherwin-Williams 2022 Color Collection of the Year “Softened Refuge.” This color collection was made for me! It has the perfect balance of neutral colors with pops of Indigo tones to balance any space. I picked the color “Slate Tile” in the Ovation Plus Interior Paint line for my accent wall. I ordered my gallon of paint online at Lowes.com and picked it up a couple hours later. Even though I don’t mind walking around the store while I wait for my paint to be ready, It was nice to walk in and pick up my already mixed paint and skip the line.

To create the accent wall, I needed a 1×4 pine wood trim in the length of the entire wall which was around 9.5 ft and a smaller 1×2 trim to create the ledge. Before moving forward with the wood trim, I painted the bottom half of the wall using the color “Slate Tile” from the HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams 2022 Color Collection of the Year. I used painters tape and a leveler to mark off where I will be painting. Once I figured out the placement, I went ahead and painted the bottom half of the wall.

To finish it off, I placed the 1×4 wood trim that I stained earlier above the painted line. Then I used a brad nailer to put it in place. Next, I nailed the 1×2 wood trim flat on top of the 1×4 to create a small ledge.

That’s it! Pretty easy right?

Now, on to my favorite part which is styling! I was able to dig up a handmade calligraphy painting my husband and I got made around 9 years ago. This was the perfect spot for it! You could also add 3 large frames to the center and you’ll have the perfect accent wall for any space.

The basement feels so warm and cozy now that we never want to leave!
