Master Bathroom Upgrade Under $200

I did a thing! I’ve been dying to upgrade my master bathroom for 4 years now. I went back and forth with so many plans and ideas but never got started until now! What better time than quarantine to start a project and see it through?

I actually started the upgrade process back in January 2019 by painting the vanity cabinets. During that time I was pregnant and too sick to finish it. Months later, I finally finished that part by adding hardware to the cabinets and then it sat like that for another few months.

I had the vision for this bathroom for so long and luckily my style did not change within the 1.5 years it took me to finish it. I knew I wanted blue cabinets and gold accents for this bathroom and I am SO happy with how it turned out! This master bathroom upgrade ended up being a weekend project and cost only $200!!

First things first, here is a before picture. I cannot believe the transformation! The entire bathroom, from the vanity to the light fixture was a standard builder grade bathroom.

First thing to change was the vanity cabinets. I went with the color Behr Cobalt Blue. Here’s a hack, for small paint jobs like this, buy the sample size paint. It costs $3 and is the perfect amount. No need to spend $20+ on a quart size or over $40 for a gallon. If you want to see a step by step tutorial on how to paint the cabinets, let me know in the comments below. The most important thing to remember is that you need to sand the cabinets, prime, paint and then seal with polyurethane.

Because I wanted gold accents, I chose THIS hardware. It’s a knob as opposed to a pull which meant I could use the existing screw hole. No measuring or patching needed.

The biggest undertaking was getting rid of the medicine cabinet. I feel it is such an outdated feature and just an eye sore. Once we took it out, we needed to patch up the wall. Luckily we had a large piece of drywall sitting around from previous projects. We cut it to shape and patched up. I’ll be getting a wall mounted magnifying mirror to go on that wall.

OK so the best part of this project was the accent wall! First I painted all the walls Behr Silent White. It is a cool tone white with a very slight grey tint. It’s the perfect white without being too stark.

Once the walls we’re painted I came back the next day to finish up the accent wall. I used an Oil Based Sharpie Marker to make staggered circles on the wall. I used the lid of my coffee canister which was the perfect circle. I started at the bottom and worked my way up. The reason I chose to do this is because wall paper is mad expensive. This gives me the look of wallpaper for a fraction of the cost. The marker cost $4 and for $4 that is a bangin accent wall!

Sticking with the circle theme, I saw these mirrors at Target a long time ago when I was browsing around. I actually designed the bathroom around these mirrors. I think they are the perfect size for the space.

Lastly, changing out the builder grade standard light fixture was not in my budget nor did I want to spend the time on it so I decided to spray paint it. Honestly, now that I did that I will go do that to all the light fixtures in the rest of the bathrooms.

I lightly sanded the surface to make sure the spray paint sticks on it. First I used a primer as directed on the bottle and then spray painted it a matte black color. That’s it! It was so simple I can’t believe I didn’t think of it sooner.

That concludes this super simple bathroom upgrade! There are a lot more things I want to do such as:
-Change out the faucets
-Add towel ring
-Tile the floor, tub and shower surround
