Zakat for Children | Pennyjar

Pennyjar | Three-Part Moneybox

When it comes to charity, teaching our children at a young age the concept of Zakat and Sadaqah, may easily turn into a daunting task. Often we as parents are not too familiar or certain about the concept and practices around them, even though Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. I came across a great program that takes away the fear and helps us parents to instill a sense of compassion in our children and pass down the Islamic tradition of giving.

Some of you may know that I have the opportunity of working with an amazing nonprofit organization Penny Appeal USA that works to alleviate intergenerational poverty. Being a part of something greater is exactly what I want to teach my daughter which is why I want to introduce you to the Pennyjar. I have been obsessed with this concept from the minute I laid my eyes on it and am on a mission to get you involved.

The Pennyjar is “for kids who want to make the world a better place.” By introducing a zakat and charity box, it puts an innovative take on your typical piggy bank. It is designed to empower children, help them understand the ethics around money, and nurture a sense of compassion towards the less fortunate.

As a Saturday school teacher, I got a small glimpse of what it’s like to develop curriculum and lesson plans and I can’t imagine the daily struggle of our teachers. Part of the Pennyjar program are complimentary lesson plans that will make teaching a breeze and learning so much fun!

Each Pennyjar comes with a three part money box to store savings, charity and zakat that is easy to assemble. You will also get a zakat tracker in which kids can track their saving throughout the whole year and calculate how much to pay in zakat.

Please check out the Launchgood page for the Pennyjar program and help support this endeavor. With your support, we can make this program even more exciting and innovative!

May your generous donations be counted as sadaqah jariyah!
